Leave families of crash victims alone, minister urges media
The families of the 70 people killed in the Tripoli air crash have appealed to the media and website bloggers to respect their privacy and not use photos of the dead they have gleaned from social networking websites in news broadcasts and on websites.
Junior home affairs minister Ank Blijveld told a news conference late on Thursday afternoon that relatives of the sole survivor of the crash, a nine-year-old boy named Ruben, had expressly asked to be left alone.
‘But many families have said ‘please don’t phone us or knock on our doors’,’ Blijveld said. ‘We hope the press will do that.’
The boy has been described as a wonder child in the international media. His parents and older brother were killed in the crash.
Families
Some 200 relatives of victims met for a three hour meeting in Hoofddorp near Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport on Thursday afternoon. The press were allowed to film at one entrance, but family members who wanted to avoid the media could use a second way in, Nos tv reported.
Each family has been given their own contact person at the foreign affairs ministry to keep them informed of developments.
Prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende and foreign minister Maxime Verhagen were both at the meeting. It was a ‘very emotional’ meeting, Balkenende told reporters later.
