Holland Belgium World Cup bid handed over to Fifa

Former internationals Johan Cruijff and Ruud Gullit handed over the joint Netherlands Belgium bid to host the World Cup in 2018 or 2022 to Fifa chief Sepp Blatter on Friday.

Nine candidates, including England and Australia, are competing to stage the event with the winning entry due to be announced on December 2.
While the other delegations arrived by limousine, the Dutch representatives arrived at Fifa’s Zurich headquarters by bike.
‘It will be the greenest World Cup ever with an environment protection plan the world has never seen before,’ Reuters quoted Gullit, who is president of the bid, as saying.
The compactness of the two countries is a great asset and the next game will never be far away, Gullit said. The bid also includes a network of free public transport and two million free bikes.
‘In the Low Countries, everyone can go to the stadiums by bike, just like we arrived this morning,’ Gullit said.
Small countries
Gullit spoke of his fond memories of watching the World Cup as a child. ‘I have an eight year old son and I have all the trust in the world that he will be able to watch the World Cup in his own country,’ he said.
In his answer, Blatter said he valued the fact two ‘small countries’ had taken the initiative to organise the World Cup.
‘It is also very good that both governments and royal families are behind the initiative. I’m also impressed that the Netherlands and Belgium have come here with so many famous footballers,’ ANP quoted him as saying.
Belgian soccer legend Paul Van Himst was also on hand.
