Healthcare will cost more, say patient organisations

Monday 31 May 2010

Patients will have to spend hundreds of euros more a year for healthcare after the general election, several patients organisations warn in Monday's AD.

A study of all the different party manifestos shows all will lead to an increase in patient spending, the Dutch patients' federation says.

'Of course there are differences between the parties and it depends on what coalition we get. But the way things look now, on average people will be several hundred euros a year worse off,' said NCPF spokesman Jan Coolen.

The council for people with chronic diseases also says parties are giving a too rosy picture of the effect of their plans on healthcare during televised debates.

Own risk

Most parties have included an increase in the own risk element in healthcare insurance in their proposals.

According to nursing organisation V&VN, GroenLinks, D66 and CDA have the best healthcare policies, each scoring 7.5 out of 10. Labour is second with 7.

Bottom of the nurses' ranking is Rita Verdonk's Trots op Nederland movement with 4 out of 10.

I really want to know HOW the increase of the own risk should help to decrease the budget deficit? The premium we pay every month goes to a commercial insurance company. The increase of the own risk will increase the profit of the company. We know, that insurance is always profitable business for the insurance companies Anybody can explain me why we should pay more own risk?

Arm, I'm really wondering the same thing. Why do we need to pay more to increase the profit of the healthcare companies? It is already one of the highest in the world and that own risk makes me crazy. A couple years back it was even optional to have it. Cost of healthcare is increasing faster than inflation without any improvement in the healthcare system.

The 'Own risk' element is just another way of increasing the charges but also encouraging us at the same time to avoid treatment & medicine. Some people even have to apply for a bank loan in order to get their dental treatment, it's no laughing matter. My other dentist lives in the Philippines, I will be visiting her when next on holiday, much cheaper!
