Former VVD leader Hans Dijkstal dies

Hans Dijkstal, the saxophone-playing former leader of the VVD Liberal party, has died at the age of 67 after a long illness.

Dijkstal, born in Egypt in 1943 where his father had been posted, had a long career in local and national politics. He was home affairs minister in the 1994 government led by Labour, but quit the leadership in 2002 after the party’s disappointing results in the election that year.
Dijkstal, respected for his warmth and humour, was fond of jazz and his saxophone solos at VVD events were legendary, Nos tv reports.
