VVD stalwart suspected of bribery

Police and finance ministry fraud officers have raided the home of promiment Liberal party member Ton Hooijmaijers, the Telegraaf reports on Thursday.

VVD stalwart Hooijmaijers is suspected of bribing civil servants between 2001 and 2010, sources told the paper.
Hooijmaijers, a former Noord Holland finance chief and economic affairs executive on Amsterdam city council, is said to have sent bills to building companies for lobbying on their behalf.

There were also raids on the home of his mother, his tax advisor and a building company, the paper says. The bills he sent carried his mother’s address.
Hooijmaijers lost his Noord Holland job last year in the wake of the collapse of Icelandic bank Icesave. He was partly responsible for the council’s decision to put €78m into the internet bank.
In September 2009 he also got into trouble after it emerged he had spent thousands of euros on the council’s credit card but had no receipts, the Telegraaf says.
Hooijmaijers told news agency ANP the raids were a complete surprise and that he had nothing to hide. ‘They have mde a copy of my computer files and taken away paperwork,’ he said.
