Support grows for Afghanistan compromise

A suggestion that the Netherlands supply 50 trainers and 200 soldiers to train police officers in Afghanistan once the Dutch military mission ends in August may have majority support in parliament, Nos tv reports on Wednesday.

The proposal, drawn up by the left-wing green party GroenLinks and Liberal democrats D66, has won support in principle from the Christian Democrats, ChristenUnie and Liberal party VVD, Nos says.
Opposition
Labour is still considering its position because it is opposed to sending any more troops to the region.
GroenLinks and D66 have called on the cabinet to come up with a formal proposal to set up the training programme which could then be put to the vote. The move would offer partial compensation for the Dutch decision to pull out of the region altogether.
Labour’s opposition to staying in Afghanistan, despite US and Nato pressure to stay, led to the collapse of the cabinet earlier this year.
