Rotterdam recount to begin on Thursday
Wednesday 10 March 2010
City council officials will begin recounting the 220,000 plus votes cast in the city during last week's local elections on Thursday.
The recount, ordered after allegations of irregularities in some polling stations, is expected to take at least two days. Some 200 civil servants will take part in the recount.
In some polling stations there are reports that people were allowed to vote without showing their passport. In others, two people were spotted together in polling booths, which is also against the rules.
Labour emerged as the winner over local populist party Leefbaar Rotterdam in last Wednesday's election by a margin of just 651 votes. Both parties have 14 seats on the 45-seat council.
