Iceland will repay, says finance minister
Wednesday 10 March 2010
Finance minister Jan Kees de Jager will outline the latest developments in the Icesave debacle to MPs on Wednesday morning, following Iceland's overwhelming no vote to the agreed repayment scheme in a referendum at the weekend.
On Tuesday, De Jager said there is no discussion that Iceland will repay the Netherlands and Britain. The two countries lent Iceland €3.8bn to allow it to pay back savers who lost money when internet bank Icesave collapsed in 2008.
'Iceland has enough means to pay off its debt,' De Jager told broadcaster RTLZ.

And how did the Finance minister come to this conclusion?
The voters of Iceland have made their opinion clear: their government is not responsible for the actions of a private bank. It looks like if Netherlands and Britain want their savers repaid, then they'll have to repay them directly rather than lend the money to Iceland for that purpose.
