Schools get more money for at-risk students

The government premium to prevent school pupils becoming drop outs has been upped, writes the Volkskrant on Friday.

Schools will receive an extra €500 on top of the €2,000 they already receive for each at-risk student. The top up means an extra investment of €26m over three years.

Education minister Ronald Plasterk says the extra money is needed to allow schools to help students who face multiple problems, such as teenage pregnancy and debt.

Since 2006, pre-college education has shown a sharp 30% decrease in drop out rates while the vocational school drop out rate has only done down by13%.
