Rush hour hit again by wintry weather

Overnight snow and sleet caused problems for commuters on many roads on Monday morning, with the ANWB motoring organisation warning of long jams and slippery conditions.

Some 430 km of traffic jams were reported at 8am, double the normal length.
In particular the northwest and central Netherlands have been badly affected. The A6 between Lelystad and Emmeloord is described as a skating rink and many drivers have abandoned their journeys.
There are also long delays around Utrecht, where three lanes of the A12 between the city and De Meern have been closed after a lorry jackknifed. Traffic on the A2 heading towards Utrecht is also stationary, with jams stretching up to 32 km, news agency Novum reported.
In Haarlem, a, 83-year-old man has died after falling on a slippery pavement while walking home.
The KNMI weather bureau says the snow and sleet will move away during the day and there will be some sunshine in places. More snow and sleet is forecast for Tuesday.
