The defence ministry is planning to lower the bonuses and other perks payable to very senior civil servants, junior minister Jack de Vries told parliament on Monday.

De Vries said perks account for an average extra 12.6% on top of the normal wage bill for top staff. The move follows government efforts to limit senior civil service pay to the €181,000 earned by the prime minister, which is supposed to be the maximum salary for most public officials.
