Amsterdam to tackle alcohol abuse

Amsterdam city council is to urge national government to increase the age at which teenagers can buy alcohol in supermarkets from 16 to 18, the Telegraaf reports on Wednesday.

The measure is contained in a new concept policy document drawn up by the mayor and city council executives to try to reduce alcohol abuse in the Dutch capital.
Research shows some 20% of the city’s population which drinks alcohol, drinks too much, the paper said.
Earlier this week, councillors from the staunchly protestant fishing village of Urk, north east of Amsterdam, told visiting MPs they wanted to ban the sale of alcohol in supermarkets altogether in an effort to stop teenage drinking.
