The Netherlands’ biggest supermarket group Albert Heijn is to stop selling factory farmed pork in 2011, the NRC reported on Thursday evening.

Instead, Albert Heijn, which is part of the Ahold supermarket group, will sell pork which has been awarded the Beter Leven (better life) standard by the animal protection group Dierenbescherming.
‘This means one million pigs will have a better life,’ Albert Heijn general manager Sander van der Laan told the paper.
The pig welfare campaign group Varkens in Nood said it would now stop its legal action against Albert Heijn for selling pork produced from castrated boars.
