60% tax rate 'undesirable', says PM again

Thursday 21 January 2010

The re-introduction of a 60% income tax rate would be an 'undesirable' move, prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende reiterated in parliament on Thursday.

Nevertheless, all avenues are being considered in the ongoing hunt for measures to generate €35bn to reduce the budget deficit, the prime minister was reported as saying by news agency ANP. 'There are no taboos,' he said.

Labour leader and finance minister Wouter Bos has suggested bringing back the 60% top rate to generate more cash for the treasury. The 60% tax rate was cut to 52% in 2001.

The cabinet has set up 20 commissions to investigate all areas of government policy with a view to making cuts and raising more money for the treasury. They are due to report back by May 1.

i am in favor of rich people paying high taxes..but 60% is way too much. I mean NL is a communistic country after all?

typcial CDA worldview. We must balance our books, nobody can live in debt? No, well Mr Balkenellende and Woutertje, take a look around you. When times are tough, governments go into debt. As long as there's a sensible medium-term plan to reduce the defecit, we can handle a year or so of unbalanced books.

But if that 35bn must be found somewhere, how about scrapping the JointStrike fighter rubbish and perhaps levying proper taxes on businesses in NL. Why is it always the man in the street who has to pay?

The 52% tax rate kicks in at just over 50.000 euro - that's hardly a rich-mans salary

I agree, 60% is another form of pure greed and should not be tolerated. The rich cannot be punished for being successful. To pay fair taxes okay, but not destroy them and their wealth and bring them to the poor house, that is going too far.

How about taxing the Royal family and stop giving them taxpayer money?
That would be a start....

Here's an idea....Stop welfare for the wealthy....Everyone has a tax burden in this country, and this should include the royal family. We see the tax rate going up year after year, and read about the royal family of nl depositing massive sums of money offshore in tax shelters....
Wake up folks, this money should be taxed as well to reduce the burden on us all.......
The tax payers shouldn't have to pay for their cost of living large either. If the tax were more evenly spread across all incomes, instead of middle class people accepting an even higher tax burden, for nothing in return is unexceptable...

exactly Hilary, that Royal family is such a waste of our taxes!

Focus on ways to attract more tourists!
Gee! WE love to visit your lovely country, but greed and mismanagement has hit the Americas hard! Also, I want to get the most bang for my buck, too! The airlines need to revamp their planes and think about improvements in COACH. Make us more comfortable and we will fly in your planes! Oh! Yeah! I was in your country this year and was shocked by the rude attendant as we were embarking on the plane.(Delta).
really tacky for the airline to design a plane where the coach people and 1st class have to funnel out one door and you make the coach people wait. Hey! I am just as good as a first class ticket, maybe even better!!!!! Thanks for listening, got carried away on my soap box! Ha! Ha! Good Day!
