Welfare cheats often don’t have to pay it back

People who are overpaid basic welfare benefits, either through fraud or a mistake by officials, are often not told to pay it back, the Telegraaf reports on Thursday.

In total, €485m has been overpaid to bijstand benefit claimants in 117 local authority areas, the paper says, quoting research by Regioplan.
While councils do sometimes ask for the cash back, they do little to make sure it actually is refunded, the paper says. CDA MPs want ministers to pressure local councils to make sure they get the money back.
