Minister under fire over older worker pay planMonday 07 December 2009 Social affairs minister Piet Hein Donner has come under attack from unions and MPs for suggesting older workers get pay cuts. Speaking on tv programme Buitenhof, Donner said older workers were expensive because of the long pay scales, meaning wages continue to rise throughout a person's working life. To make it more attractive for companies to employ older staff, this system should be looked at again, Donner said. The government is planning to increase the pension age from 65 to 66 in 2020 and then again to 67 in 2027 and needs to take action to get more people to stay at work. At the moment only 28% of the over-60s still have a regular job. Stupid Trade union federation CNV said Donner's comments were 'stupid and hopeless'. 'There are so many preconceptions about older workers which are wrong,' said spokesman Bert van Boggelen. 'That they are less productive, expensive, you name it. Donner is reinforcing that picture. We should be working to combat preconceptions... rather than writing people off.' Socialist MP Paul Ulenbelt said Donner's suggestion is 'ridiculous'. He pointed out in the Telegraaf that most pay scales have 10 to 15 steps and after that salaries only go up in line with the annual pay rise. © DutchNews.nl
Donner has a cold heart. I am also shocked in the whole behavior of CDA the so called christians, they are only for the rich and their own self interest. Such hypocrites have nerve to call themselves Christians. They are no different then the American republicans who claim christian values, and actually only support greed for the rich. By sandra | December 7, 2009 9:09 AM this is what happens when u let religious zealots have power, GET THEM OUT ASAP, they want to close the coffeeshops, you will lose so much money and worse the use of hard drugs will go up a lot, well said Sandra he has no heart By adhd | December 7, 2009 4:02 PM For once I agree with the CNV.However there is certainly a problem with many older people who do not deliver and yet get their full salary. I think that an employer should be allowed to negociate lower pay in these cases. By Jan-Dirk Wagenaar | December 7, 2009 4:09 PM The politicians and the royalty over 60 could lead by example and take a pay cut. By Sean | December 7, 2009 5:03 PM Indeed, how can this ugly party call themselves "Christians" ?Or democrats actually...But worse, why do so many people vote for them? They simply want to protect the corporations, the employers and most of all, themselves. By Edward Ka-Spel | December 7, 2009 5:04 PM Mr. Donner, has been around a long time, perhaps too long maybe he should retire. By stuart577 | December 7, 2009 5:53 PM Dear Mr. Donner, perhaps you should look at your self in the mirror, you have been in government too long. By stuart577 | December 7, 2009 6:07 PM It is a wrong move. Older workers have earned their higher wages, being employed (faithful) longer...why penalise them? Yep, there are no wealthy demorats - bawahaha! By eko | December 7, 2009 6:47 PM I am an employer and over 60 myself. From the age of 30 one's energy clearly reduces every 10 years. Until the age of about 50 this loss of productivity is compensated for by the gaining of experience, but one struggles more and more to keep up with the changing world. It makes perfect economic sense for salaries to reduce after the age of about fifty. That is the reason why the (overpaid) over fifties tend to get overstressed at work and end up with some disablillity pension. Donner is right: this culture should change for the benefit of society. By Frans | December 7, 2009 7:04 PM Employers listen to and look at Piet on TV & then they look at olders workers ... By Gerard | December 7, 2009 7:07 PM Donner looks OLD and if you like to change the world mr Donner than start with yourself By metha | December 8, 2009 12:47 AM As an older person I wonder if the current system doesn't discriminate against older workers? Isn't it harder for an older worker to get a job, especially if they don't have much experience, because they have to be paid more? If you try to change fields or lack experience in a field you should be paid appropriately for your experience level, not your age. Perhaps this is what Donner was refering to. By David Rainey | December 8, 2009 8:17 AM Would those who believe productivity lowers with age like to look at how much overtime my over-50 Dutchie has accumulated this year? By CW | December 8, 2009 8:58 AM One should be payed according to ones contribution, not age, colour, sex or race... BTW...Jesus Christ has absolutely nothing to do with Dutch politics. Dutch politics suck, same as UK. *** THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN. *** How are we all so much better off with the € and the EU anyway?

Why should older workers suffer because employers have misconceptions? Are they looking for solutions or to appease employers?
