Ethiopia sentences Haarlem student to death

A 30-year-old student who lives in Haarlem has been sentenced to death in Ethiopa for attempting to overthrow the government, reports Trouw on Wednesday.

Mesfin Aman, who has lived in the Netherlands as a refugee since 2006, was informed of the death sentence by phone from London by one of the other four people also convicted by the Ethiopian government.
All of them except one, who is in prison in Ethiopia, have fled their home country and were tried in their absence.
Aman was initially arrested in 2001 during a protest against the regime of the Ethiopian prime minister Meles Zenawi.
Amam told Trouw that he is not afraid. ‘I have the protection of the Dutch government who will not extradite me to Ethiopia,’ he is quoted as saying.
