Students face housing fraud crackdown

Monday 09 November 2009

Students who lie about living away from home in order to collect bigger government grants face fines as well as paying back the cash, education minister Ronald Plasterk has decided.

Home-based students get a basic grant of €93 a month, but those living out get almost €260. The fraud is estimated to cost taxpayers €80m a year.

Plasterk says he wants to treat student grant fraud in a similar way to social security fiddles. This means students suspected of cheating may be visited at their official address to see if they really live there.

Plasterk is also considering fining students 25% of the wrongly-paid out cash. At the moment, students caught lying about their home address only have to repay the money.

Friends and relations who help students with fake addresses could also be fined, the Telegraaf quotes Plasterk as saying.

That's just weird!

In a country where they love Registration!

If everyone is registered, isn't it then very easy for Ronald Plasterk, staff, and agents, to check where every student lives ... ?

Gerard I think that's the thing, they register themselves at a friend's house in order to claim the money. Because they only need to repay what they wrongfully earn, they sort of have nothing to lose.

Veldrin, I do understand what you say but I also am aware that there are some students, living at home, registered at home, but somehow also getting the living away subsidy. Just doesn't make sense to me, especially as so much money has been spent on IT.

Why are students getting different grant amounts anyway? Why should taxpayers subsidize students to have a private flat rather than live at hyome and save everyone the money. I say give one grant of EUR 95 to all and let them figure out what is best. Better yet, give them no grant and force them to take a part-time job and earn that extra cash!
