Liberals ask Brussels about kilometer tax

The Liberal party VVD has asked the European Commission for its views on the government’s plans to introduce a kilometer tax on motoring from 2012, the Telegraaf reports.

On Friday, ministers agreed to replace road tax with a kilometer charge for Dutch motorists in an effort to reduce traffic jams and pollution.
‘I am curious how this plan fits in with the free movement of goods and people in Europe,’ VVD member of the European parliament Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert told the paper.
Hennis-Plasschaert told the paper she was also curious about the discriminatory aspects of the tax, which will only be introduced for foreign motorists in 2018.
Earlier, the commission rejected a Belgian plan to bring in an extra motoring tax for all drivers using Belgium’s roads. But Belgian drivers would get the money back in the form of a rebate.
