Alcohol addiction soars among older drinkers
Thursday 05 November 2009
The number of requests for help dealing with alcohol addiction among the over-55s has soared 89% over the past 10 years, according to new figures from Amsterdam's Jellinek addiction clinic quoted in the Telegraaf.
In the 1960s and 70s, the average alcohol consumption in the Netherlands was 2.5 litres per year, but that has now gone up to 8.5 litres, spokesman Roel Kerssemakers said.
'It is now quite normal to have a drink before dinner, during dinner and then one to relax with afterwards,' he said.
