A quarter of local councillors quit early

Friday 06 November 2009

A quarter of the local councillors who won a seat at the 2006 local election are no longer in the same job, according to local authority magazine Binnenlands Bestuur.

Some 40% have become council executives. The rest have quit for private reasons, often because they find it too difficult to combine the job with family and a career.

Most councillors (16 out of 45) stopped early in Amsterdam, with the Hague just behind on 15 out of 45. The Mook en Middelaar district in northern Limburg lost the most councillors. Eight out of 13 have gone so far.

Local councillors in the Netherlands are not paid but do get allowances to make up for loss of earnings.
