Tents ‘last resort’ as worker housing

Companies who bring in temporary workers from abroad can house them in tents in special circumstances, housing minister Eberhad van der Laan told MPs on Monday.

Because so many migrants are only in the country temporarily, they will be put up in temporary housing, Van der Laan said.
‘Tents are certainly not the ideal choice, but can be used in extreme cases of need and therefore have to remain an option,’ the minister said in a note to parliament.
The minister was responding to concerns about an asparagus farm in Someren where the owner had applied to house temporary workers in tents. Other accommodation in farm buidings had been deemed a fire risk by government inspectors.
