Prince urged to quit Mozambique project

Monday 05 October 2009

Crown prince Willem-Alexander should pull out of a controversial project to build a holiday home for his family in Mozambique, the head of the monarchists' association is reported as saying in Monday's Volkskrant.

'It is very unfortunate to choose such a poor country as Mozambique, particularly if you do it out of privacy considerations,' Michiel Zonnevylle, chairman of the Bond van Oranjeverenigingen was quoted as saying. 'I think prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende and queen Beatrix should talk about this. And I would really value the project being abandoned.'

The project came under fire from MPs in August because not enough is being done for the local population, despite earlier assurances.

Hi, I am from Mozambique and I thnk that the project should go ahead. We are a poor county and we need all ingesments to take place. Specialy if there will be employment available for my countryman. All construction are more than wellcome in this very humble and happyness rich country.

If you want to do something for the Mozambique country, build a school or hospital; it will give jobs as well as benefit the people far more than just a vacation house royals and menial work for house servants. If the Prince wants a house there he should also build a hospital and schools.

To Buzzer: the Machangulo project consists of serval schools and hospitals. A few of these are already in use.

Totally agree with Buzzer, I think building schools and hospital are much more appropriate than just a house for Royal pleasure, involve the locals, give them something back... then tax payers would be more happy to know their money is put in good use.

It is a pitty that such project will no longer go ahead. It could serve as a very strong incentive to the region, helping to boost the local economy, as well as supporting conservation in the nearby Maputo Special Reserve and the Ponta Do Ouro Marine Reserve. A Royal House, would not only be just a "holiday-house", it would help to put that area of the country in the map of development. Hope there could still be a chance of reconsidering it.
