Minister apologises over airport search

Justice minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin has apologised to a Suriname government minister who was given a body search in public after setting off a metal detector alarm at Schiphol airport last week.
Gregory Rusland, on his way from Kenya to Paramaribo, had already removed his belt but kept setting off the alarm at a security gate. But he objected when a security official tried to pat down his crotch area in full view of the public, the Telegraaf said.
His shoes were later found to be responsible for setting off the alarm.
A spokeswoman for the counter-terrorism group NCTB told the paper diplomats could also be searched despite their diplomatic status but this check had not been carried out properly. The organisation would not say what the correct method of searching diplomats was, the paper said.
