Christmas trees to soar in price

Monday 19 October 2009

Real Christmas trees are set to be up to 30% more expensive this festive season than in 2008, according to Monday's Telegraaf.

Frank Bos of Greenteam Europe, which sells some 1.5 million Christmas trees a year across Europe, told the paper the price increase is due to a rise in demand.

In particular, the Nordmann fir (abies nordmanniana) is in demand this year, Bos said. Last year a Nordmann cost a maximum €50, but this year the average price will be between €45 and €60.

The quality of Christmas trees is extremely good because of the perfect growing conditions this summer, he said.

Personally I will be avoiding those thieving gits this year trying to sell me a tree for an outrageous price. Instead, I'll be buying a fake tree...it;s both cheaper and kinder to the environment. When will this country wake-up and stop robbing the simple consumer

@caycu I respect your view but do you think the fake tree is good for the environment? Think about the energy that get into it right from the rubber plantation to the production line and even to recycle planet. it is more expensive to the environment than the traditional one. It is better u simply avoid them all ........

Saving our Planet ! This includes the Tree's. More people should be deterred from buying the Real Ones, (people every year DUMP them 2 dys after Christmas on the streets) very sad. Wakey, wakey Fake is good & cheaper, if you have a garden stick the lights on a tree outside, just as nice. And also less house fires !

Hi Caycu,

while I agree with you that the prices are sometimes extremely high for a Christmas tree, I have some serious doubts with respect to the kindness to the environment of a fake tree. They are usually made of plastic which means oil. So, making and dismissing one will pollute and consume energy. On the other side if we are well organized and do things with care a real creating a real tree produces oxygen and cleans the air.
By the way I see the Christmas shopping hysteria has already started! That's definitely bad for the environment!

"Christmas! Bah, humbug." Dickens' Eb Scrooge got it right. It's a festival based on a contrived event by which we're exhorted to pay extra and to consume even more than usual. And we argue about which kind of tree is best? When will we ever learn?

Bringing a tree in the house is retarded. But apparently it's good business...

When you buy a fake tree, you can use it every year for ages, just like my grandmother used hers for 20 years... saving money :)

There's always the option of buying a real tree in a pot. After Christmas you can sell it back to the company that sold it initially. Or you can plant it outside/keep it for the next year ;)

Come on guys, Christmas trees are commercially grown, especially for the consumer that has more money than sense.

You'll still be finding pine needles on the floor at the end of March next year!

Recycle trees. There are several placed to buy trees in dirt. You replant them when the holiday is over and next year you have another tree waiting. Seeing I am not religious it still amazes me the lengths that a religion can be tied to madness in buying things. Last year in the USA a person was trampled by store patrons, madness.
