Gulf between industry and politics ‘too wide’

The gulf between Dutch industry and politicians has become too wide and threatens to hurt the country economically, Peter Elverding, president of the supervisory board at financial services group ING says in Monday’s Financieele Dagblad.

‘One of my concerns is that in the Netherlands, both sides are increasingly taking opposite positions. Politicians think business people are greedy and in the business world people say politicians don’t understand anything,’ the former head of chemicals company DSM said.
France and Germany show the importance of industry and politics working together, Elverding said.
‘It is now of particular importance that both sides work together under the leadership of the economic affairs ministry to make sure the Netherlands emerges from the crisis in a stronger position and does not let opportunties opened up by the EU go to waste, he said.
