Rotterdam city council will not give licences to free festivals for the next two years, following this weekend’s fatal shooting at a beach party, the city’s mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb said on Monday evening.

Such events would appear to have a risk of attracting ‘excessive and mass violence’, the mayor was quoted as saying.
And he urged the government to set up a formal inquiry into violence at open air festivals and sports events.
Meanwhile, evidence is mounting that a police bullet probably killed the 19-year-old youth shot dead at Saturday’s Sunset Grooves event at Hoek van Holland. Nos tv quotes sources as saying the police were the only ones to fire weapons and eyewitnesses have similar stories.
But the public prosecution department said it had evidence other people had also fired guns. Forty police officers are investigating the event and all 80 police officers called in after trouble broke out are being interviewed, a spokeswoman told the Volkskrant.
Meanwhile, Dutch Rail says the 10 trains used to take partygoers home from the festival have been damaged to the tune of €50,000.
‘People were been sick, smashed windows and broken connecting doors,’ a spokesman told reporter.
