Amsterdam to pay brothel owner €40,000
Thursday 20 August 2009
Amsterdam city council has been ordered to pay a brothel owner over €40,000 in compensation because it took too long to decide whether she could have a licence.
Nathalie Venekamp claimed in court she was losing €2,060 a week on renting out rooms in the city's red light district because of officials' slow progress. The windows were empty for 20 weeks.
The court ruled that council had taken too long and ordered it to compensate Venekamp for her loss of earnings.

Bravo, the court! It's good to know that brothel owners can count on the Dutch legal system's support during a recession. But shouldn't there be some kind of accountability for this misuse of public money? I'm not suggesting that the incompetent officials responsible for the delay should foot the bill. But might not a few days in stocks set-up in Dam Square soften the taxpayer's bitter pill?
