Amsterdam to pay brothel owner €40,000Thursday 20 August 2009 Amsterdam city council has been ordered to pay a brothel owner over €40,000 in compensation because it took too long to decide whether she could have a licence. Nathalie Venekamp claimed in court she was losing €2,060 a week on renting out rooms in the city's red light district because of officials' slow progress. The windows were empty for 20 weeks. The court ruled that council had taken too long and ordered it to compensate Venekamp for her loss of earnings. © DutchNews.nl Get the DutchNews.nl newsletter in your mailbox: Click here to subscribe
haha, I love this kind of news. By NL | August 20, 2009 4:05 PM I bet the staff at Amsterdam City Council were slipped a year of free sex at the brother as a reward for their decision. By PimWilder | August 20, 2009 7:55 PM I like Mr. Dawkes idea however I'm pretty sure that politicians are immune to shame. By frank | August 20, 2009 8:56 PM totally agree michael! but in all seriousness, thats half a working year that they 'thought' about it. wondering, if the decision should take lets say... 4 weeks, does that 1/5 ratio give an indication of how bloated public sector spending is? Who manages the 'stats' of local government performance? Or do they publish their own? By hlm | August 21, 2009 12:13 AM What the hell?! Shut down the brothel and put the woman in jail!!! Instead they pay her? What is this world turning into?! By sean | August 22, 2009 12:24 AM Place your comments: |

Bravo, the court! It's good to know that brothel owners can count on the Dutch legal system's support during a recession. But shouldn't there be some kind of accountability for this misuse of public money? I'm not suggesting that the incompetent officials responsible for the delay should foot the bill. But might not a few days in stocks set-up in Dam Square soften the taxpayer's bitter pill?
