Gas reserves still good for billions of euros

Dutch natural gas reserves still contain billions of euros worth of gas according to a report by research institute TNO and the mining supervisory board, reports the Financieele Dagblad on Monday.

Estimates for the volume of gas in underground fields was increased by 33 billion cubic metres last year and represents a windfall of €5bn for the government, the paper says.
According to Jan Lutgert of the TNO, the increase is mainly the result of more exploration by oil companies. Because of the rise in oil prices, firms are more likely to exploit reserves considered unprofitable in the past.
In total gas reserves have generated €201.5bn for the treasury with a record €14.8bn last year, reports the FD. The forecast for the current year is €9.5bn, it says.
