The controversial pro-abortion organisation Women on Waves is to be prosecuted for distributing abortion pills off the Spanish coast in October last year, according to a number of media reports on Tuesday.

The news follows a decision by the organisation on Monday to suspend activities.
Women on Waves operate from a boat which travels to countries where abortions are difficult to obtain and offers terminations while moored in international waters.
According to the health inspectorate the organisation has a licence to carry out abortions from a special mobile clinic and nowhere else.
Rebecca Gomperts, Women on Waves director and abortion doctor, told the NRC that the move is ‘very interesting’ as her staff were permitted to hand out ‘morning after’ pills during a campaign off the coast of Poland in 2003 without a licence.
She tells the paper that offering a pill to terminate pregnancy to women who are up to 16 days late with their menstruation is not defined as an abortion under the current legislation.
The use of the morning after pill has been included in tighter abortion regulations introduced this year.
Health secretary Jet Bussemaker denies that the stricter rules are intended to make the work of Women on Waves impossible, reports the Volkskrant.
