Rotterdam to bid for 2028 Olympics

Rotterdam city council has decided to make a bid to host the 2028 Olympics in the port city – making it a rival to Amsterdam, the Telegraaf reports on Tuesday.

By that time, Rotterdam will have two state of the art sports stadiums and the Ahoy stadium will have been renovated, said Peter Lamers, who is in charge of sport in the city. Various projects already under way will also be a boost for the campaign, Lamers said.
And a number of athletes heading for the London Olympics in 2012 have decided to stop off in Rotterdam first for extra training, he said. ‘We are on the same latitude and that means we can consider ourself a ‘gateway to London’, Lamers said.
Countries have until 2016 to declare themselves official candidates. The Netherlands hosted the Olympics in 1928.
Ministers are expected to discuss efforts to bring the 2028 Olympics to the Netherlands at Friday’s cabinet meeting, the Telegraaf said.
