EU elections: Labour, CDA neck and neck

The European parliamentary elections are shaping up to be a neck and neck race between Labour (PvdA) and the Christian Democrats according to a TNS Nipo poll for RTL news.

The poll puts the two coalition parties each on five seats - two less than they currently hold. Geert Wilders' anti-Islam PVV, contesting its first European election, is set to win four seats.

The pro-European D66 are heading to go up from one to three seats while the Liberals (VVD), Socialists, GroenLinks and orthodox religious combine ChristenUnie/SGP will all win two, the poll shows. For the VVD it marks a halving of support.

The Netherlands has a total of 27 seats in the 785-seat parliament but that will be reduced to 25 at the next election.

The polling stations are open from 7.30am to 9pm. Voting computers are no longer being used following concerns about privacy.
