Delta begins nuclear power station process

Energy firm Delta has started the application procedure to build a second nuclear power plant in the Netherlands, the NRC reports on Tuesday.

The paper says Delta, which is owned by local and provincial governments in Zeeland, has submitted confidential plans to the environment ministry.

After completing a compulsory environmental report, Delta will submit a formal request for a licence in 2011, the paper says.

Delta, which owns 50% of the Netherlands' only nuclear power station at Borssele, said last year it plans to build a second plant. Borssele provides around 7% of the country’s electricity.

The current government has agreed that no new nuclear power plants would be built during its term and environment minister Jacqueline Cramer is known to have doubts about Delta's plan, the paper says.

She believes the Netherlands will produce more energy than it can use by 2012. 'Then you have to ask if you should be creating more capacity in the form of nuclear power stations,' she told the paper on Tuesday morning.
