VVD leader calls for clarity on Kroes

Monday 11 May 2009

Liberal party (VVD) leader Mark Rutte has called on the cabinet to decide quickly if the Netherlands' European Commissioner Neelie Kroes should be eligible for a second period in office.

Kroes' period as competition commissioner is due to expire next year, but she has already said she would like to stay in the job.

Kroes, a former VVD minister, is frequently mentioned in 'most powerful' rankings as one of the most influential women in the world because of her tough approach to EU competition issues.
