Illegal workers common in cleaning sector

Tuesday 19 May 2009

Labour inspectors found illegal immigrants and examples of deliberate underpayment in more than one third of spot checks carried out on cleaning companies last year, according to the service's annual report.

Problems with staff papers and payments crop up in one in six investigations on average.

Illegal workers from Bulgaria are increasingly common, replacing people from Africa the report said. Bulgaria is a member of the EU but its nationals need work permits to get a job in the Netherlands.

Checks on cleaning firms and their subcontractors and companies with their own in-house cleaners, are to be stepped up this year.

Labour inspectors handed out fines totalling €46.7m in 2008, the report said.

The industrial lords want quick integration of the eastern Europe to enslave them.Averagely the eastern European work harder for few cents. But stepping up checks also comes with the cons associated with unemployed illegal immigrants. they will be victims of the under world drug and sex trade dealers. It is better we step up both simultaneously.

I do not think it is "industrial lords" but simply the corrupt mid-level businessmen who want to make a profit. The upper level would not risk the criminal system for what is not a great profit for them.

As for stepping up checks, what is needed in the The Netherlands is a proper Identification System - ID Cards for residents AND nationals and after that, no tolerance to those with no papers.

Prostitution and drugs is a different policing/political issue, but if the job market is closed to illegals, very quickly the bulk will go and the rest can be policed.
