Schiphol must lower fees: competition body

Tuesday 21 April 2009

Amsterdam's Schiphol airport must stop passing on the cost of building a sound-barrier around one of its runways to airlines, the competition authority NMa said on Tuesday.

The ruling means Schiphol must cut its landing and baggage handling fees by a total €3.5m, the NMa said in a statement.

The complaint was made by KLM and the airline umbrella organisation Barin.

Under new rules introduced in 2006, airport fees must reflect the actual cost of operations. Building a sound wall is not an airport activity, the NMa said.

I totally agree with the airlines' complaint. On a ticket Toronto -Schiphol (vice versa) which costs $499.00 added taxes/fees are $ 382.25
today! Surprise: your total is $ 881.25
while you think you booked a cheap flight...

what people do nowadays is that they book long distance flights from neigbour countries. It is much cheaper to fly from Belgium or Paris than schipool because of the tax. To US the saving I am talking about is nearly 50%.
schipool should really stay competitive by lowering taxes.
