'Dutch deportation law breaks EU rules'

Tuesday 24 March 2009

Dutch rules covering the deportation of people who have been convicted of a crime in another EU country break EU law, according to the advocate general of the European court of justice, reports news agency ANP.

Under Dutch law, someone who lives in the Netherlands but has been convicted in a different European country can only escape deportation if he or she has a permanent residency permit.

But the advocate general said this contravenes non-discrimination principles, ANP reported.
