Green energy production up to 7.5%

Monday 23 February 2009

Some 7.5% of the energy used in the Netherlands in 2008 was produced from sustainable sources, up from 6% in 2007, the national statistics office CBS said on Monday.

The amount of wind energy produced rose by 25%, as did the use of biomass by major generating stations, the CBS said. Wind power now accounts for 50% of the green energy produced in the Netherlands.

Biomass accounts for 25% of green energy production and the rest comes from sun and water power, the CBS said.

The government wants 9% of energy production to come from sustainable sources in 2010.
