The Netherlands has called on the pope to ‘explicitly condemn’ statements made by British bishop Richard Williamson who denies that the holocaust ever took place.

‘These statements are not only demonstrably wrong, but shocking and upsetting to many people, particularly at a time when anti-Semitism is again on the rise in Europe,’ foreign minister Maxime Verhagen said in a statement.
Verhagen has contacted the Vatican’s diplomatic representative in The Hague to get the message across, the statement said.
The pope last week reinstated Williamson who denies that six millions Jews were killed in concentration camps during World War II.
