Thursday 08 January 2009
Carla Zielman won the national skating marathon on the Oostvaardersplassen lakes near Almere on Thursday.
The 23-year-old farmer's daughter managed to shake off the rest of the field of 85 skaters to win the final sprint.
The 60km race, the first to take place on natural ice since 1996, took place in heavy fog.
By 4pm, the men's marathon over 100km was still under way.
Meanwhile, ProRail has issued a warning to skaters not to cross railway lines that intersect frozen canals.
