Shops to pay for food safety inspections

Friday 21 November 2008

Shoppers will be faced with a few more cents on their grocery bills from January because the food safety body VWA is to begin charging shops and supermarkets for repeat inspections, the Telegraaf reports on Friday.

The food retail trade association CBL says its 4,500 members will be forced to pass the cost on to consumers.

The VWA says the move is part of EU legislation and only supermarkets which need follow-up visits will be charged.
