Philips to launch 'instant' drug detector

Friday 21 November 2008

Electronics concern Philips has announced the launch of a hand-held device that uses nanotechnology to detect marijuana, cocaine, speed and other drugs in saliva within two minutes.

Philips has made an agreement with British-based drug-testing firm Concateno to market the device to police as from next year, the company said in a statement.

Philips’ spokesman Steve Klink told AP news agency that the device could be used for roadside tests by police. ‘The car is stopped, a swab is taken and put in the device, and in 90 seconds you have a result," he is reported as saying.’
