Mother, boyfriend not guilty of baby killing

The mother of a 17-month-old baby battered to death last December and her ex-boyfriend have been found not guilty of killing the child because there was not enough evidence to prove which of the two was responsible.

Judges said 'the violent death is a terrible fact' but that they could not take the risk of jailing an innocent person.

Child protection officers had been monitoring the baby boy's welfare since November 2007.
