Dutch cental bank to help Icesave savers

The Dutch central bank is to help Dutch people who have accounts with the troubled Icelandic internet savings bank Icesave to get their money back, the Volkskrant reports on Wednesday.

The paper says bank and finance ministry officials are holding talks with the Iceland authorities about what steps to take.
Icesave, which has attracted between 50,000 to 75,000 customers since launching in the Netherlands in May, is part of the Landbanki group which has run into financial problems and is now under government protection.
The British authorities are also working on a similar arrangement with Landbanki, the paper says. Icesave has some 300,000 clients in Britain.
Dutch savers’ money should fall partly under the Dutch and partly under the Icelandic guarantee schemes, says the Volkskrant.
This means Iceland would be responsible for the first €20,887 and the Dutch government would cover the rest, up to the new maximum of €100,000.
