Tax breaks urged to boost working at home

People who work from home or move house so that they are closer to their jobs should be given financial encouragement by the government, a government committee recommends on Monday.

The move would reduce rush hour traffic and top civil servants at the finance ministry are prepared to work on such an initiative as long as it is given formal support by the cabinet, the Telegraaf reports on Monday.
The recommendations of the government’s mobility management committee will lead to a 5% reduction in rush hour traffic in six regions (Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Eindhoven-Den Bosch and Arnhem-Nijmegen) in the coming few years, the spokesman told the paper.
Over 150 companies and 500,000 employees are located in these areas and the scheme – through a system of covenants – could spread throughout the country.
One of the fiscal incentives proposed is an increase in the tax-free allowance (currently €5,000) for people who now live between 25 and 30 km from their work but decide to move closer.
