'Expats stay in Holland longer'Tuesday 02 September 2008 Although the exact reason remains a mystery, a survey by the British HSBC Bank has concluded that the Netherlands scores the highest when it comes to how long expats want to stay in a particular country, reports the Volkskrant on Tuesday. Of those interviewed for the survey, 82% said they had already been in Holland for over three years - despite their dissatisfaction with things such as housing and salaries. The Volkskrant did some research of its own and found a whole list of other gripes. Annemarie Stout, who runs workshops entitled Understanding the Dutch for the Royal Tropical Institute, said Asians find the Dutch lacking in respect while Americans are irritated by the their ‘yes, but’ mentality. Poor service is high on list of most expats’complaints too, she said. And Irene Bunt of relocation agency Settle Service said foreigners are often frustrated with the Dutch habit of giving everybody a say in everything. © DutchNews.nl
Sorry but this is just total BS!! As an expat that has lived in and out of the Netherlands for over 15 years now. I can tell you the top 3 countries in the world to live for an expat is the USA,Canada And the EU as a whole. Everyone I know always extends as long as they can there, but not Holland alone. I have never heard anyone of my coworkers say oh yeah I want to extend in Holland... Usally all I hear is it is way over taxing, way too spendy, way too crowded. For me I love being in Holland for a nice 3 yr post, but after 3 yrs I need out... By DR | September 2, 2008 3:58 PM "Although the exact reason remains a mystery" ?? Its the Coffeeshops and the easy access to the herb, why else? :-) By Paul | September 2, 2008 5:32 PM Probably because anything is beter than Boris and Gordon. By Minnie | September 3, 2008 4:00 PM 30% ruling is probably one of the best explanations. If it weren't for that I bet the majority of us would get the hell out or would never put up with everything over here. I know I wouldn't. By LS | September 3, 2008 6:13 PM Well, I have already been to 8 countries. Great experience, all of them...different culture, language, food, people, expat salary, jetset life...Even then, I get the itch to move after 2 or 3 years...Holland is no exception...Canada, here I come.... By yugtrams | September 3, 2008 9:36 PM One of thr worst things about Amsterdam is that there are just too many expats. As an expat living in Amsterdam for over 5 years, I have some gripes about the Dutch and Dutch culture. However, the fact remains that this is a fantastic city to live in and many of my expat friends feel the same. Compared to most places in England for example, it is a very safe place to live. I will continue to moan about the things that annoy me about the Dutch because I'm English and we moan so very well. So in a rare moment of magnaminity (I thinks thats the word) I love my life in the Nederlands and I don't plan to leave any time soon!
