Executive tax plan under fire

The likely effect of cabinet efforts to reduce top executives’ pay is not at all clear, according to the government’s top advisory body, the Council of State in Wednesday’s Volkskrant.

Finance minister Wouter Bos is introducing several tax measures to reduce the level of senior staff pay packets, including a 30% tax on golden handshakes of over €500,000. He expects to raise €60m a year, the Volkskrant says.
But the Council of State says the measures have no analytical underpinnings and there is no definition of what ‘excessive rewards’ actually are.
