Youngsters face evening curfew

Friday 11 April 2008

Children under the age of 12 found hanging around on street corners at night face being picked up by the police and taken home, under new rules being put together by the justice ministry.

‘A young child should not be on the streets at night,’ justice minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin told MPs. He is considering a curfew deadline of 8pm to 9pm. Households where children are repeatedly found on the streets will come under social worker supervision, Hirsch Ballin said.

The minister said the evening curfew is an important measure to protect younger children from becoming involved with older criminals.

On Thursday it emerged that one in three children aged 10 and 11 have already committed some form of petty crime.

How are the police to decide who is 10 & 11 and who is 12 & 13 since ID is only required for those 14 & older?

Who cares if they don´t have ID! No matter if you look that young then you have no business on the street anyway, Where are the parents? They are there ID!!!!!!!! Be a parent and this would not be an issue... Kids under 18 should not be allowed to hang in the streets anyway. Bus stop being broken up,cars being scratched & there windows broken out. Just to name a few. How many time have you woke up on a monday to head to work only to find the busstop glass all over the street..Or graffitti all over everything you like in your neighborhood. Sick and tired of it!! you want kids take your responsibality and raise them. Ethics, morals, life standards, keep them off the street at night, know where your kids are at all times. Thats a start.

RE: Andy...

If their under 14, then they need a curfew! It's that simple. It's quite simple... if their ID says they are 14, then send 'em home... if they lack ID, thus implying they are younger than 14, SEND 'EM HOME! :)

Seems to me the police will not implement such a measure since they have "more important" matters at hand! Btw, the initial plans of the minister to "re-educate" the parents of those kids apparently have been dropped...
