No prison in bag-snatch deathThursday 06 March 2008 A woman who drove after the 19-year-old youth who stole her handbag and killed him by pinning him against a tree, has been given 180 hours of community service for dangerous driving. The public prosecution department called for a 2.5 year jail term for manslaughter but the judges said there was no evidence the woman had deliberately tried to kill the youth. The length of time the case has taken to come to court - three years - was also a factor in sentencing, news agency ANP said. The woman, known as Germaine C, is to appeal. © DutchNews.nl
If she isn't punished at all it would undermine the state of law. After all, no one is above the law, even a victim. If you allow someone to take the law in his own hands, society will start breaking down. By Q | March 6, 2008 6:23 PM Give me a break. This woman was not taking the law into her own hands. Look if someone tried to steal something of yours, then you would respond by chasing them to get it back. 1st off the police in Holland are never to be found and take forever to respond. The guy would have been gone and all her very personal stuff with it. kids photos, love letters maybe other more personal things woman carry in the hand bags would be gone. You don´t want someone taking it and if they do you would chase them.. I think pinning someone to a tree is a good result to get them stopped. Don´t steal and you won´t have an issue. You wan´t to steal things then get ready to die, thats happends when you are a robber. The police might shoot you, you might get stabbed by a home owner opon entering there home, or ran over by a woman that you just robbed of one of her most private things her hand bag. Like my dad always says if you can´t take the heat then don´t enter the kitchen..... By Funny guy | March 6, 2008 11:52 PM She didn't set out that morning with the intention of being robbed, she didn't premeditate hitting some guy with her car. As soon as this guy grabbed her bag he forfeited his right to belong in a law abiding society and put himself in a precarious predicament. He didn't ask to be killed, but he could have very easily avoided it. By James Mansell | March 7, 2008 1:41 AM

I think the fact that she was given any penalty at all was a travesty, but this isn't as big of a travesty as I expected.
