Dutch want EU support for stand on Wilders

Friday 07 March 2008

The Netherlands would like to hear ‘unified’ support from the European Union for the country’s position on Geert Wilders’ anti-Koran film, foreign affairs minister Maxime Verhagen said in answer to parliamentary questions on Thursday evening.

France, Spain, Slovenia and Sweden have already given their backing to the Dutch stand, Verhagen said.

Like the Netherlands, they believe in the right to freedom of expression and freedom of religion, Verhagen said. And they also condemn painting all Muslims as extremists, news agency ANP reported him as saying.

The Dutch government has been careful to distance itself from Wilders’ 10-minute film. Wilders, leader of the anti-immigration PVV party, says the film shows the Koran to be a fascist book which encourages violence.

Earlier, Labour and Liberal MPs expressed their concerns at the lack of support for Denmark when riots broke out over the Mohammed cartoon question.

Yesterday it emerged that no Dutch television companies are prepared to accept Wilders' demand to show the film in its entirety.

I find this disturbing, in no way do I support Geert Wilders or his film or his stance on Isdam, but I do defend his right to free speech, and dislike that the EU could "silence" a politician, that's not what freedom (apparently we still live in a supposed free society) is supposed to be about.

They created this monster and someone else has to help pick up the pieces, again?

If the Holland is afraid of repercussions as a result of this film then it is time for the country to admit it has a major problem. That problem is certainly not Wilders.
